The Gunk Bugs is one of the possible fourth fights a player can run into. The fight is won when the Miniboss, Weevil, is defeated.
Strategy
Depending on the deck, the fight with The Gunk Bugs can progress extremely smoothly or spiral out of control quickly. Both Blaze Beetles and Gunk Gobblers power up when cards are destroyed for any reason (including Consume and Recycle), with Blaze Beetles gaining Frenzy and Gunk Gobblers gaining attack. Dungroks have a lot of health and destroy a card in hand when attacking, so they will inevitably power up Blaze Beetles and Gunk Gobblers (particularly due to their Resist Snow making them hard to stall), and all three of these enemies have the same Counter of 3. Gunkbacks are inconveniences that get in the way of other enemies and create Gunk Fruits when hit, which clog up the deck and make it harder to draw useful cards. Once Weevil appears, even a single attack can dramatically shift the tide of battle, since it destroys every Item in hand (including any Gunk Fruits that Gunkbacks created) and gains attack for each, while also simultaneously powering up any Blaze Beetles and Gunk Gobblers on the field.
In order to stand a chance against The Gunk Bugs, a deck must be able to properly prioritize and defeat targets quickly. Even if the player avoids using Consume cards or sacrificing allies, Dungroks appear in each wave and will destroy cards in hand. Blaze Beetles and Gunk Gobblers are very weak at base, so killing Dungroks first is almost always the best strategy, especially since they also have Resist Snow to prevent stalling. Beyond that point, prioritize whichever enemy is most dangerous to the current deck: Blaze Beetles deal low damage but hit the row with File:Barrage.png Barrage, allowing them to effortlessly shred Shades and Clunkers, while Gunk Gobblers deal large single hits that can take out even bulky Companions. Try to avoid hitting Gunkbacks whenever possible, but since they do deal a decent amount of damage, taking them out is still usually worth the Gunk Fruits it creates. During the turns before Weevil appears, try to hit the Redraw Bell, so that there are as few cards as possible in hand once Weevil gets to attack. If it gains large amounts of attack, use expendable blockers to stop it in its tracks and keep up the offensive.
Ink is very useful in this battle, allowing the player to negate whichever enemy's effect is most problematic. With a good source of Ink, it can be worthwhile to allow Dungrok to destroy unwanted cards while Inking Gunk Gobblers and Blaze Beetles so they don't get any benefits.
The Heartmist Station and Nourish Charm are notable counters to Blaze Beetles, as they will immediately restore 1 health between each Frenzy attack. However, the Heartmist Station is still vulnerable to the Blaze Beetles' Barrage, so pay close attention to it.
